Apparently Ben Stiller can actually be cast in
something other than a comedy role. He plays
the assistant to Bill Pullman in this twisty
who-done-it mystery, and does quite a good job.
Pullman is is the comedy in this film as he
plays an eccentric genius detective.
Its always hard to talk about mysteries,
especially those that have twists, as often the
reviewable content of the movie would
necessitate spoilers. This movie is no
different, but I will say that I am usually hard
on movies that have irrational plot twists. You
know what I mean by that, the writers cannot
conceive of a way to surprise the audience, so
they just write in a plot reveal that often has
only very loose connection to how a rational
person would behave. This movie does not do
that. It has a couple twists, but they are not
so outlandish as to ruin all plausibility. For
that I give it props.
I enjoyed the movie, it was a good
mystery/thriller, it was confusing, but not too
confusing. I don't rate it higher because I am
hard-pressed to point out anything in it that
makes it specifically better than other things
in the genre. It was all done capably, just not
amazingly.
I would recommend people to see it. It was
entertaining, and I am glad I watched it. Like
so many others though, I am very doubtful it
will ever be seen again. It lacks the "Usual
Suspects" pizazz.
