Synopsis:
A guy challenges himself to say "yes" to
everything for an entire year.
The Freak's
Rating: B- : There is a saying I use
all the time when I talk to someone about a
movie, "it is what you would expect". When
many critics review a film they put it up to
incredibly high standards, forcing the film to
excel so far beyond its genre that it rarely
makes the cut and typically receives a poor
review. I never review films in that way,
instead always analyzing what the film was
trying to do. In this case, Yes Man is
trying to be a semi-mindless comedy with an
interesting premise and a primary actor who can
deliver comedically. In this case, Yes Man
succeeds.
Consistently subjecting himself to roles that
require little to zero acting talent, Jim Carrey
amazes me. Having been in some wonderful
films such as The Truman Show and Eternal
Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Carrey has proven
that he can handle dramatic roles. I enjoy
his comedic performances, don't get me wrong,
but there is little edge nor ability needed to
pull off his Yes Man character. Zooey
Deschanel, cute in my mind since Elf, is perfect
as Allison, exuding all the weirdness pretty
much every character she chooses to play has.
All other supporting roles are par for the
course.
Yes
Man makes no major strides in creativity or
cinematography, but it isn't meant to.
That is what most critics can never seem to get
when they rate a film like this. Yes Man
has some funny moments. I didn't laugh out
loud, but someone who likes Jim Carrey more than
I might do so. So sticking with my intro
to this review, I would say this...if you think
you would like it, you probably will.
Chris's Rating: B-
: I agree with the Freak...it was what I
expected: a comedy with subpar points and an
interesting plot starter. Nothing really amazed
me, except Allison--one of the quirkiest,
likeable people I've seen on screen in awhile.
Alex's Rating: D- : Not my cup of tea. It had a few good laughs, but the laughs WERE few, and overall, it was stupid, immature, plotless, dissatisfying and superficial.
