Whip It is another classic example of a trailer telling you everything the film will give you. The story of a young girl who wants to be something her parents don't want her to become has been done over and over. That is not to say it couldn't have been done well, it just isn't done well here.
Marketed as Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It throws together a nice cast of actors doing their best to mold a worthless script into something meaningful, all the while dog paddling in mediocrity with nowhere to go. Though performances are good, this film proves the acting chops on display aren't enough to turn a bad role into a decent one. Ellen Page is adorable per usual and some supporting roles are acceptable, which ultimately is what saves the film from complete failure. The casting of an Ashton Kutcher lookalike was one of the worst choices Barrymore has ever made, and that is saying something. He brings zero talent to the table.
Writing is completely unoriginal, with zero surprises. Direction is as expected, with little originality. This will be entertaining to young teenage girls when caught in the right stage in their lives, but for most audiences, this is more predictable than Titanic and a waste of time.
