The Freak's
Rating: B+ :
Immigration has recently taken a political
backseat, but the previous President thrust it
into the forefront of hot button issues in
America. People are willing to die to get
into our country, preferring the risk of jail
time over life in their own country. This
is something we should take to heart during our
everyday complaints. There are many rights
that we, as Americans, take for granted.
There is also the debate over what actually
merits a citizenship. My personal opinion
is that we should welcome all people ("bring us
your tired, your weak, your huddled masses..."
as it says on the Statue of Liberty), but I do
believe that some language and paperwork
restrictions should be enforced for the process.
Wherever you stand on immigration, there are
many films you can watch that attempt to push
you one way or another.
Under
The Same Moon is such a film, strong in its
convictions and poignant in its delivery.
The story of a young boy attempting to reunite
with his mother is heartbreaking in some moments
and thought provoking in others. Acting is
well done, especially by the boy's mother, Kate
del Castillo. All supporting characters
are strong, with the exception of America
Ferrerra, who seems tossed in to garner name
recognition from audiences.
This
story is well-crafted. There are scenes
that get your heart pounding and the final few
moments of the film are perfectly done,
elevating this from a B- to a B+. So often
in life it is what you don't see that is better
than what you do. Under The Same Moon is a
good film, worthy of rescuing from the deep
archives of your video store shelves for a spin
in your DVD player.
