The Freak's Rating: B+ : I know, I know, Twister? A B+? Before you rip, reconsider what makes an entertaining film. For me there are many elements of a film that need to come together for pure entertainment and an A+ rating. Twister, though lacking performances of high caliber by virtually EVERYONE involved, sports wildly constructed CGI action. Intensity is notched up with a decent score and all effects involved (both visual and audible) are nicely melded together. All in all, Twister is still an entertaining slice of guilty-pleasure cinema.

I don't know anyone who likes Helen Hunt in anything she has ever done, with mild exception given to her role in As Good As It Gets. Bill Paxton has been an unsung hero in the acting genre, never showcased with as much talent as he has been of late with his leading role on HBO's Big Love, but rather turned to as an empathetic face to put on a supporting role of a box office blockbuster (e.g. - Aliens) or a lead role in a B-movie type (as here). Twister went on to outpace many B movies and ultimately become an enormous success for the studios who produced it, but Paxton would never win an Oscar for his turn here. The only acting that is on display here worth anything is Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who I doubt even lists this on his resume.

Acting aside, the film is blended together nicely, a touch of romance, action scene, minor character development, more action, extra action, unrealistic action and finally...more action. The film never pretends to be anything more than it is, a fun ride at the movies. As that it succeeds.
