Tommy Boy is a classic example of physical comedy. Sadly there isn't much here except Farley. Spade is as over-the-top as he's ever been, and remember everybody, this is the guy who did The Adventures of Joe Dirt. Supporting cast members do what they can to keep the film afloat, most notably Dan Aykroyd's turn as Zalinsky. There are some very funny moments here, but again, all because of Farley. This film contributed vastly to the sadness surrounding Farley's death. It was evidence the man was incredibly gifted at physical humor.
Farley's good performance aside, there are too many problems to list on a single page. Tommy Boy's script is ridiculous, its characters overwritten and its climax as predictable as they come. Still, a comedy doesn't need those things to be successful. The best of the genre have them thrown in as icing on the cake. Tommy Boy succeeds as a decent comedy and thought it wouldn't be the first comedy I'd recommend for someone to have a laugh, it wouldn't be the last either.
