Synopsis:
Robbie (Sandler) is an aging wedding
singer whose fiancé dumps him. Prospects for a wedding singer are limited
to say the least and the reality of where his life is going eventually hits
home. After going into a depression, the only thing pushing him back into
normalcy is his relationship with a waitress named Julia (Barrymore). The
two hit it off with only one hitch, Julia's fiancé Glen.
The Freak's Rating: A : I will completely disagree with Brian
and wholeheartedly side with Angie on this one. Though I disagree with her
on Big Daddy (I thought it was awful), she is spot on with this one. It
also reminds me of working at the video store. There was rarely a time
when The Wedding Singer wasn't in circulation on my playlist during my shifts at
Pick A Flick Video.
The Wedding Singer is a romantic
comedy with emphasis on the comedy. The music of the 1980s, as cheesy as
it was, was very inspirational in my tastes and most of the movies that came out
during that decade are the ones which shaped my appreciation for film.
This movie brought them all back. Add to the music a funny performance by
Sandler and the most adorable Drew has looked in years and you've got a great
one.
Jennifer M's Rating: B :
I can't believe there are people out there who did not find this movie
funny. There are a number of quotable lines from this film. I can't tell you
how many times I have shouted, "you suck" at some crappy American Idol performer
or the like. It's just meant to be goofy fun, so go ahead an laugh at this one.
Bob's Rating: F : I
begrudge even giving 2 minutes of my time to this film, it's so bad, but I
though I'd warn others. I rarely write reviews, but felt a need to here. There's
not a single thing funny about it, not one scene.
Its nothing like the 80's and shame on anyone who lived through the 80's who
think it is realistic. Its soppy, stupid and a pathetic plot that anyone could
guess. Adam Sandler, who is awful in everything mumbled throughout.
The worst thing is people who weren't around in the 80's actually seem to
believe it was like this, in the same way they believe Braveheart, Patriot &
Titanic had realism in them.
The poorest film ever.
Jen's Rating: A- :
Classic romantic comedy!
Brian's Rating: D+ :
This is where we get to see a difference in opinion from the MMF
audience. I need to bring down the average on this one. Adam Sandler should
have stopped after SNL, his 1st comedy album, and Happy Gilmore. Most
everything else he has done has been mediocre at best. I think this was his
first foray into a romantic comedy, and that only helped to bring down his image
if you ask me. I never actually saw Big Daddy, that Angie acclaims to be his
2nd best. I skipped it because he lost me at this movie.
Angie's Rating: A :
This is one of my favorite comedies. It brings back so many memories
of when I worked at the video store in town. All video stores have some movie
playing when you walk in... and every Saturday night I would put this movie in.
I would inevitably get about halfway through and someone would come up to the
desk and ask to rent it. I can just listen to this movie and get a good laugh.
I don't have to pay close attention to it, which is why it was such a good
choice for the store. It is by far, the best comedy that Adam Sandler has come
out with! (Big Daddy is a VERY close second though with Happy Gilmore in
third.)
