Brian's
Rating: C : Unlike Scott, I am completely partial on movies. I carry a
completely open bias into films that are in styles or genres I like, have actors
I like, or directors I like. Chow Yun-Fat is one such actor, and often pairs
with John Woo to make some really cool action movies.
One thing that John Woo excels at is in making gunfight scenes. One of my
favorite gun fights ever is in Face Off. I bring that up because once again in
this movie the gun fights are done very well and are fun to watch. Woo is the
producer in this one, but you can clearly see his touch in these scenes.
However, other than that, the movie is complete junk. The plot is terribly
thin, hard to follow and has more holes in it than the Bears defense this past
year (2008). So many plot elements are ridiculous starting with the fact that
Mira Sorvino's character has absolutely no reason in the world for latching onto
John Lee (Yun-Fat) and joining in the bullet parade. This is only one of many.
I would love to recommend this movie, but I just can't. Its probably not even
worth a C, but I am not ashamed to let my biases carry it a bit higher than it
probably should be. If somebody made a YouTube montage of clips from the gun
fight scenes, that would be worth a recommendation, but as it stands, I am
reviewing the whole movie, not just the select good parts.
The
Freak's Rating: D- : I'm always afraid to fail a movie that Mira Sorvino
is in, simply because her father will always be Pauley from Goodfellas in my
book :). However, Brian's bias takes center stage in his review, as this
one is junk...stylized junk, but still junk.
