The Freak's
Rating: B- : I've been a Ryan Reynolds
fan for a while. Though he has the
stereotypical look for a Hollywood leading man,
he has yet to do a horrible job in any of the
films I've seen him in. He has a Dane
Cook-ish delivery. Some who are annoyed by
that style will be turned off from any project
he has a part in, but those who like it will
enjoy The Proposal.
Romantic comedies needn't be too drawn out to be
deemed worthy of a see. Problematic as
they typically are, The Proposal isn't nearly as
bad as the trailer makes it out to be.
Sandra Bullock, about 10 years past her physical
prime, is charmingly annoying as Margaret.
Hollywood tends to milk good looking actresses
for all they are worth, pushing them way past
their cute and sexy stages in life until
ultimately they fall flat as a leading lady and
have zero sex appeal (e.g. Meg Ryan's turn in
"In The Cut"). Margaret is portrayed as an
older woman right from the start, one who is
aware of her fading looks and that her love
interest is many years younger. The
illusion typically thrust upon audiences that
the leading woman is ageless isn't attempted,
and that allows the story to be a tad more
believable. The remainder of the cast,
including Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig
T Nelson and Betty White all do fine with their
performances, allowing a sense of "family" to be
established when the script requires it.
The
writing has holes, as all romantic comedies do,
but with the exception of a horrific dog/eagle
scene it is rather well done. Injections
of Malin Akerman as Gertrude allows a hint of
mystery to the film's final act and dialogue is
sharply delivered by the leads. I laughed
out loud a few times here and though the
creative team behind The Proposal isn't likely
to be dusting off shelves to house Oscars, this
is a decent romantic comedy that would easily
serve the purpose for a date night.
Alex's Rating: A+ : Now here is one h*** of
a good film! An absolute crack up. Well written,
well acted, packed with some VERY clever and
unexpected twists and turns which grip and
amuse the audience in equal measure.
A must see. If you haven't seen it, go, if you
have, GO AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
