 Synopsis:
The Nines is a film
following the personal life of a
troubled television actor, a television show
writer and an acclaimed video game designer.
Reynolds, plays all three characters (Gary,
Gavin and Gabriel). The film is broken
into three different acts, each of which tells
one of the characters' stories, spins you
through a strange ending to each act, then leaves you
curiously in the hands of the following act.
The
Freak's Rating: D+ : I
enjoyed Van Wilder. I realize by saying
that, some of you have already clicked off this
page. Tara Reid was still decent looking
back then and Ryan Reynolds came into his own as
a comedic actor, Kumar from Harold & Kumar was
funny in it. I won't make too much of a
case of it, only to say that it was mindless
humor and I enjoyed it. For any Dane Cook fans
out there, pop in Van Wilder and find the same
sarcastic character style in the lead role
(years before Cook took it on the road).
The main thing that came from
Van Wilder, was hope for an actor. My hope for Ryan Reynolds to
evolve as an actor has pushed me to watch such
trash as The Amityville Horror (remake) and even
the HORRIBLE romantic comedy Just Friends.
My latest hopeful chance was taken with The
Nines.
Mysteries are one of my
favorite genres of film. But done poorly
they are the worst of any. A bad comedy
can still have some funny moments, a bad horror
movie can still have scares, but a bad mystery
movie has no good parts within it. The
Nines is a poorly done mystery movie.
I
can't discuss much more of the movie without
revealing the "surprise" ending of the film.
Many characters are introduced, with repetitive
characters scattered throughout each story.
You are supposed to watch each segment in wonder
and after the final twist, see an explanation
that not only causes you to ponder its accuracy
but makes you want to view the film again and in
a different light. When The Nines finally
had its reveal, I was disappointed. The
reveal was good in theory, but just didn't
convince me. It may have been because
little time was allotted for validity to their
explanation. The only people who will like
this film are the ones who think that they "got
it" and people who didn't like it must not have.
Trust me, that is not the case. I fully
understand the reveal, I just didn't care about
it enough to make it an effective piece of
filmmaking.
David Lynch fans will
notice a number of ripped off storytelling
techniques throughout this film. The
director was obviously trying to emulate
greatness. Lynch pulls you into the story
and leaving you with a sense of wonder of it
all. You may not fully understand it, but
you do want more. The Nines leaves you
wondering why in the world you wasted your time.
Acting was decent all around here and the camera
work was swift, keeping pace as best it could.
However, stylish filmmaking does not equal good
filmmaking and in the end that is all this film
has.
