 Synopsis:
Joseph Gordon
Levitt plays Chris
Pratt, a former high
school hockey star who
had it all and lost it
all in a horrible car
accident. Chris is
haunted by the
accident and the tole
it took on everyone
involved. Due to
injuries sustained in
the accident, Chris
suffers from brain
trama. This ailment
affects his life so
severely that he has
to keep a notebook
with him to track his
daily life and keep
going. "I get up, I
take a shower...with
soap"...the words go
into his notebook to
chronicle the minutia
of his life.
The Freak's
Rating: A : Joseph Gordon Levitt
is the kid from Third
Rock from the Sun. His
role on the show
sticks with you.
Perhaps its the hair,
I don't know. I didn't
think it would be easy
for him to break from
that, but he certainly
has. My favorite
critic out there,
Richard Roeper, calls
this his favorite film
of 2007 and I must
agree. In a sea of
mainstream spring hits
hitting DVD and Blu
Ray (my format of
choice), this is worth
hunting down and
watching.
Chris lives with a
blind man, Lewis,
played brilliantly by
Jeff Daniels. If Jeff
Daniels will always be
Harry from Dumb &
Dumber you're
listening to the right
critic. This part
could have been very
lame. The handicap
friend who advises the
lead character is a
cliche, but Daniels
does a great job of
adding just enough
depth to the character
to not steal away
focus from Chris'
story.
Not long into the
movie the plot
develops into a
masterful spin on a
heist. Some seedy
characters including
Gary, played by
Matthew Goode, and
Luvlee, played
perfectly by The
Wedding Crasher's Isla
Fisher, step into
Chris life and take
him on a journey he
signs up for. Chris'
quest for self
confidence and
acceptance leads him
down a path of poor
decision making...at
least during the first
couple acts. I will
say nothing more about
the plot.
The movie has high
repeatability, if
nothing less for the
character portrayal by
Levitt. Acting in a
role like this takes
extreme discipline,
reasearch and accuracy
and he pulls it off.
Academy Award noms
rarely go to an
undiscovered gem like
this, but Daniels and
Levitt are deserving
as well as the writing
team.
The focus of the film
is never taken off of
Chris and his quest to
find normalcy in his
life. The ending was
pitch perfect. In a
behind the scenes doc,
Levitt states that he
is so thankful the
director ignored
mainstream Hollywood's
input on the scripted
ending. I couldn't
agree more.
Lori's Rating: B : This is not your typical bank robber story
line. It makes you think and see the world from another point of view. I
enjoyed the movie.
Jen's
Rating: A
Brian's Rating: A : Good movie. Engaging storyline, and colorful
characters. It reminded me a little of "Memento". I think I'll have to talk
with the MMF because I must have seen the wrong ending. The one I saw we as
scripted as they come.
