A new friend of mine recently pointed out how mistaken I was at my thoughts on The Notebook, since I put it just below a bucket full of horse manure as far as watchability goes. Though I stand by that review, I'd like to suggest that she as well as any others who enjoyed it, give The Last Song a viewing. Though it is filled with similar cheesiness and poor dialogue, this film has heart.
Greg Kinnear is one of my favorite actors, consistently underrated in nearly every performance he gives. He is wonderful in his delivery as Steve, Veronica's (Miley) father. Miley is surprisingly decent here, doing as best she can with what she is given. Though Llian Hensworth (pictured above) is no doubt added for physical appearance over acting ability, he is par for the course as the love interest who gets about 10 minutes of on-screen dialogue. A supporting performance by Kelly Preston is also nicely done.
Direction is nothing spectacular and the writing, per usual for a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, is difficult to translate to film effectively and without laughable moments meant to be sincere. All in all though, this is a decent drama, showing enough appeal to garner respect from me for Kinnear and a younger generation for Miley.
