Synopsis:
An American citizen is trapped in
Cambodia during tyrant Pol Pot's bloody "Year Zero" ethnic cleansing campaign,
which claimed the lives of two million "undesirable" civilians.
Brian's Rating: B :
Not too many people know much about the Khmer
Rouge, and the historical events that surrounded
Cambodia during the post Vietnam war era. There
were a communist led political group that made
Stalin look like Mother Theresa.
This movie does an excellent job of giving
information about this era without being
boring. It shows the direct impact it had on
the Cambodian people. It also made me ashamed
of being American where we did a large part to
cause the problem, and then let the Cambodian
people pay for it.
The movie stars one of the Law & Order guys, and
has John Malkovich as a supporting actor. It is
a powerful political drama depicting the
conditions in Cambodia and is worth seeing. It
prompted me to spend some time on Wikipedia
learning about the politics of the time and
place.
It falls short of an A due to its 1984
technology as well as some ill defined editing
where jumps in time and location where
confusing. The sound was also poor. I had to
turn up my stereo above -9, which I never have
to do for movies. The acting ni the film is
also not that great, but fortunately, their is
little dialog, and the implications of the true
story are enough to cover it up and keep it
interesting. Its not something I would watch
again, but it is something I would recommend
others to see.
