Synopsis:
Hundreds of bottles of
dirty formaldehyde
create a creature that
feeds on humans. The
Host has an underlying
political
anti-American message
which is essentially
accurate and is based
on one family's story
of loss and their
quest for revenge.
However, the family
was lame and therefore
it descends back to
just a plain old
monster movie.
The
Host is the highest
grossing film in South
Korean history and you
can see why. While
most foreign films
lack the blockbuster
characteristics of
CGI, The Host has
plenty of it. It is
obvious there was a
substantial budget.
The Freak's
Rating: C : I enjoy monster
movies. There is
something to the
element of unknown
monster strength.
Maybe shooting silver
bullets will work?
Fire? Acid? I smile a
little during the
all-too-predictable
scene in every monster
movie where the heroes
figure out how to
bring it down. It was
refreshing, albeit
depressing, not to see
that in The Host.
My self-indulgences
aside, it is very hard
to give the movie
anything more than a
C. The acting is
horrible in all parts
except the lost little
girl and even the
mediocre special
effects can't swing
this film into the "I
would recommend it"
A/B category. I think
you could throw a rock
in the middle of any
shopping mall and hit
someone with enough
talent to beat out the
male lead for the
role. I wanted to
punch him in the face
every minute or two.
On a Halloween weekend
where you just want a
few thrills and kills,
The Host will serve
its purpose as a
rental. Otherwise,
leave it on the shelf.
