Synopsis:
In the early 1970s, one of the strangest billionaires to
exist, Howard Hughes, was untouchable by mainstream media.
The conspiracies he is alleged to be a part of reach from
the Kennedy Assassination to Watergate (that one Nixon admited he had a part in) to putting multiple presidents
in and out of office. Today, I can find out what Britney
Spears is doing each and every minute. It is mind boggling
to me, a child of the internet, that an intriguing figure
such as Hughes had enough staff and power that noone could
see, hear or even guess what he was up to. The cloak of
secrecy around this man was amazingly built and maintained
up until his death.
The Freak's Rating: B-
:
The Hoax is the story of Clifford Irving (played
brilliantly by Richard Gere). Clifford, after being shot
down for a book deal, finds he has no way to make ends
meet and comes up with a plan...a brilliant plan.
Irving's plan was to write a book claiming to be the
autobiography of Howard Hughes. Irving believed there
was enough information out there to draft a believable
story and Hughes would never come out of hiding to
renounce it. The elaborate methods he went to and the
story of the book are the basis for this movie.
Richard
Gere is in top form as Clifford Irving and I think it
merits him an Oscar nomination. The irony of a madman
writing about a madman is cleverly incinuated but never
over emphasized. Screenplay writing is in wonderful
harmony with the direction here and the picture never
goes off track. It is a fascinating event that happened
not that long ago. The movie falls just short of making
an A effort in storytelling, but it is still quite good.
After you see it, take a gander at how much the book is
worth on Amazon now!
Brian's Rating: C : Its a good movie on the making of the fake
autobiography of Howard Hughes. Its amazing that the writer was able to get
away with it as much as he did. The movie is based on a true story, which makes
me wonder how close those antics were that he tried. Unethical, yes. But very
tenacious.
