Synopsis:
 "Directed by Steven
Spielberg" should have
you already searching
for the film if you
haven't seen it.
Spielberg does an
excellent job of
pulling the audience
into a film and
holding on until the
end. He does it
wonderfully with The
Color Purple. Whoopi
Goldberg plays Celie,
the primary character
of the film. The film
starts in 1909 and
follows Celie from a
young girl to an old
woman. She is taken as
a child to be the wife
of a local farmer. You
know, this movie
demands that I not
tell you much and let
you experience it for
yourself (my friend
Eric would appreciate
that).
The Freak's
Rating: A : How many of you out
there go to Yankee
Candle? If you're like
me, your
wives/girlfriends love
it and you get pulled
in. Now don't get me
wrong, I enjoy the
smells of different
candles but after a
while I end up
starting to get
overwhelmed with
scents which gives me
a headache and I have
to leave the store.
I feel that whatever
method of delivery you
choose for movies, be
it rental or the
theater, you are put
somewhat in the middle
of a candle store.
There are MANY
different things you
can get and you get a
"whif" of what they
will be like by
glancing at the video
case, reading reviews
and hearing what
friends and family
think of the film.
In every decent candle
store, there is a
little jar filled with
coffee beans. These
are for refreshing
your senses. The beans
ground your senses and
therefore help you to
make better judgements
on candles you'll
smell next. The Color
Purple is one of the
many coffee bean jars
in the candle store of
film. Most people
never stop to refresh
with a good film, they
just move on with what
they know and compound
the residue, resulting
in a dulling of their
senses and making them
unable to appreicate
the wonder of a good
film.
It is a sad commentary
on our society that
less than 100 years
ago we treated some
people like dirt.
Though I believe we
have come a long way,
I believe we need a
couple more
generations before the
racism is gone.
This
is an epic story of
courage, strength and
perserverance. There
are many similarities
here to the
storytelling of Gone
With The Wind. I've
only cared for Whoopi
in a handful of her
roles since this one,
but her potential is
there and you can see
why she was plucked
for stardom after this
performance.
The cast includes
Danny Glover, Rae Dawn
Chong, Lawrence
Fishburne and Oprah
Winfrey. All
characters in the film
are extremely
memorable.
With a running time of
nearly three hours,
The Color Purple is
truly an investment of
your time and worth
every second. The
performances are
solid, the story is
memorable and you
won't regret it.
