Synopsis:
Three Irish Catholic brothers from
Long Island struggle to deal with love, marriage, and infidelity.
Brian's
Rating: B+ :
This was a very good low budget, indie romantic
comedy. It reminded me a whole lot of "Clerks"
in regards to how the dialog of the characters
would interact. It has the same low budget,
good script writing feel to it. Another similar
feeling movie that comes to mind is "Swingers".
Acting in it wasn't great, but it wasn't
terrible either.
This won some acclaim at the Sundance Film
Festival back when it was released in 1995, and
the acclaim is well deserved. Its a simple
story of 3 Irish brothers that come together to
live in their parents house for a short while.
They each have a difference romantic context,
and the movie watches these three story arcs
play out. The humor in it is mostly dry, the
kind that makes me laugh. As mentioned before,
the movie really shines in the interplay between
the characters.
I would have easily put this in the A range if
it was not for an ending that was tiresome and
unoriginal. There were so many ways that the
director could have taken the 3 endings that
would have been cool. Instead, he opted for the
boring old mainstream love-always-wins type
thing.
A final note, it was written, produced, and
directed by the guy who plays "Barry" in the
cast (one of the brothers). He did a good job.
Break out of your mainstream movies for a bit
and give this (or other) indie films a try. You
just may like what you find.
