Synopsis:

Martine offers Terry a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London's Baker Street. She targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don't realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal.

The Freak's Rating: B- : "Based on a true story" always peaks my interest.  Usually my next step is to head to wikipedia to research just exactly how "true" it is.  Going away from the majority of films in this genre, The Bank Job is relatively accurate to the true story.  Of course we are thrown some humor and likeable characters, but for the most part it nails it.

I have labeled Jason Statham as the next major action star.  His movies are decent, even when being quite critical and he has insane likeability in all his characters.  There is little acting ability injected alongside Statham here, with most actors unrecognizable and average in ability.  Director Roger Donaldson has a decent action resume, boasting Species, Dante's Peak and The Recruit as his standouts in the genre.  Donaldson does a good job pacing the film as it moves along nicely.

The writing is slick, but it steals far too much from other crime capers.  There is little originality here, with a small exception to British humor in a few moments.  With a semi-decent script, swift pacing and a good star, the film succeeds at being entertaining, though nothing beyond your typical action flick.

Brian's Rating: C- : Because of my recent run on Jason Statham films, this one got pushed up on the queue despite the lackluster review by Scott.  After watching it, I liked it even less than Scott did.  It barely makes it into the "glad I saw" category.

I agree with all of Scott's points.  Acting was downright vanilla and boring (even by Statham), and the script, even though being close to the true thing was just not terribly entertaining.  I think the reason is that the bank heist thing is so overplayed now, that even though this one is grounded in actual events, it is a tired concept.

The movie was mildly entertaining when it showed some conniving intelligence injected into the Statham's character as he attempted to orchestrate powerful forces against each other.   This caught my attention a bit, but it was not enough for me to recommend this movie to anybody.
