Synopsis:
In a remarkable turn-of-events, the
result of the presidential election comes down to one man's vote.
The Freak's
Rating: B- : Politics and comedy are almost
always a good combination. Primary Colors,
a flick about the Clinton administration that
after I type makes me want to watch it again,
was hilarious. Dave was good, W was good,
etc... The concept of Swing Vote is an
interesting one, that one single vote could
decide an election. With the electoral
college, it certainly does seem as if our votes
count for a smaller amount each election.
Kevin
Costner is great here as Bud, true to form with
some of his more beloved characters in Tin Cup
and Bull Durham. Costner can really pull
off an everyday idiot American, better than most
of Hollywood's attempts. Costner's
daughter Molly, played by newcomer Madeline
Carroll, is a nice bonus to the film's already
strong cast boasting Kelsey Grammar, George
Lopez, Stanley Tucci, Judge Reinhold, Dennis
Hopper and others. All parts are played
nicely.
Writing is efficient and some of the political
commercials shown here are hilarious.
There is a nicely crafted ending, but the meat
and potatoes of the show is the loser Bud and
his relationship with his daughter, an element
of the plot that could have been done far
better.
Neither political party is shown preference,
with idiocy on both sides nicely displayed.
If you are a political person you'll enjoy it on
a number of levels. For everyone else it
holds a mild recommendation.
