Starship Troopers (loosely based on Robert
Heinlein novel) was an awesome movie. It had
aliens, it had cool fighting, and it had
purposeful humor and cheesy lines. None of this
was like the book, but it took on this style as
its own and did it wonderfully well.
Starship Troopers 2 was awful. It sought to
capitalize on the somewhat accidental vibe that
the first one created, but it failed miserably.
Perhaps because they actually tried to
purposefully duplicate a presence that just sort
of happened.
Because of the utter failure of the 2nd, I was
hesitant to see this third one, but pulled it
out since it was one of the few Blu-Ray's my
brother-in-law had in his collection. I have to
say that it was better than the 2nd movie and
makes it into the glad I saw category. It was
still nowhere near as good as the first, but at
least some of the simpler story telling
returned. Characters were more liable, and
although the acting was never really great with
the franchise, it was notably improved over #2.
