The Freak's
Rating: C+ :
Sticking to a genre is something studios used to
do quite well. There was no mistaking that
Gone With The Wind was a dramatic period piece
or that Caddyshack was a comedy. It seems
over the last 10-15 years of filmmaking (ever
since Tarantino did it so masterfully with Pulp Fiction)
that studios want genre-crossing films.
Some have done it quite well (American Beauty
comes to mind immediately) and most fail
miserably. Smart People lies somewhere in
the middle. The humor is done well and at
times the drama is nicely crafted.
There
are too many stereotypes here to give it an A.
You have a disgruntled teenage daughter who
hates anyone her widowed father might date, a
brother who is too fly-by-the-seat-his-pants for
his own good and a father who is coming to grips
with reality after a life-changing event.
Though the acting is well done and there are a
few good scenes in the film, it is a little too
produced to be genuine.
