Synopsis:
Sex and the City picks up three years
after the series left us. Typical to the style of the show, a narrative
starts out the film with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) explaining the girls'
stories and recapping recent events that led them to the starting point of the
film, no doubt an attempt to clue those in who may be seeing the girls for the
first time. After years and tears, Carrie is officially in a relationship
with the man of her dreams, Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Samantha (Kim Cattrall)
is managing her boyfriend's acting career in Los Angeles and enjoying sex as
much as ever. An active businesswoman, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is juggling
a marriage and a family life with her husband and son. The group's
conservative core, Charlotte, is all smiles as she enjoys a marriage with the
love of her life and adopted daughter.
We begin seeing the girls still
living in NYC, but with a more settled-down lifestyle than before. Carrie
and Mr. Big begin to plan a life together, while others in the group seem to
find their lives falling apart. The girls soon reunite, only to be forced
to unearth their lives and rely on the true strength of the show, the friendship
between the four of them. The girls learn that though they aren't the same
20 year olds that hit NYC years ago, their friendship is still as solid as ever.
So much of the plot can't be even hinted at lest it be spoiled, so I'll leave it
at that.
The
Freak's Rating: A- : Many of my male family members and
friends have accused my tastes of being the sort that might get me kicked out of
"the man club". I've been told that my testosterone levels may be out of
whack, I'm missing a chromosome, etc... I've been given crap for enjoying
genres of movies that aren't considered "manly". So let me write one
statement that should ensure that I am out of the club...the Sex and the City
movie is way more entertaining than the new Indiana Jones movie.
There...I'm out of the club...and couldn't care less about it. At the
local Wehrenberg theater, cosmos were poured (the theater has a liquor license),
makeovers and pedicures were being performed and gift bag drawings to spas and
beauty salons were being given away. There was enough estrogen in the air
that you could actually see a haze of sorts over the crowd. Though I
didn't participate in any of the activities, I did laugh that I was the only guy
there :).
It isn't often that a television show
makes the jump to the big screen and keeps the entire cast intact. I never
missed a Sunday night with the girls on HBO. I've seen every episode of
every season and loved the series. It is one of the most entertainingly
honest portrayals of bonds between women I've seen and it makes me laugh every
episode. You may not have a personality like one of the characters, but
you can understand their friendship, and that is the heart of the picture.
With a lullaby pacing during the
first half hour of the film, I was getting a little bit nervous for how it might
turn out. The following two hours+ (yes, the running time is nearly 3
hours) was beautifully paced and fantastically entertaining. It was as if
S&TC had been granted a seventh season and we were able to screen the entire
thing in one sitting. All characters are solidly portrayed, staying with
the tone of the series. All the characters you love from the show are a
part of it, and the film even showcases new talent such as Jennifer Hudson (of
American Idol) as Carrie's assistant.
HBO produces the best entertainment
on television, with The Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Oz under their belts.
No doubt this will be used as a litmus test for The Sopranos movie, currently
being teased at around Hollywood water coolers. If this is any hint at
what HBO can produce onto the big screen, we are in for quite a treat if we are
ever able to see Tony Soprano step back into the spotlight. I was sad at
the end of this film, sad that I was remembering why I liked the show so much
and sad that it was over (at least for now). To the girls out there (and
men comfortable with their own feelings and sexuality), if you liked the show,
see the movie. It is another block of time you can spend with the girls of
Sex and the City, and you'll have a great time.
Laura's Rating: A :
Just saw this movie and loved it loved it loved it! I also watched the
last few episodes of the show so that I would know what was going on. This
helped to enjoy the movie more, but even without knowing anything, it still
would be GREAT! My friend that I went with was sad when it was over because
it's the "end" of the show for her. For me, however, it's just the beginning!
I'm renting season one tonight! :) I also highly recommend this movie to
ANYONE!
Jen's Rating: A :
This movie was fantastic! I actually didn't watch the Sex and the City
series because I didn't have HBO and to be honest I was a little close-minded
about the show. I thought it was about what most of you who haven't seen the
show think it's about. A bunch of chatty girlfriends who talk about nothing but
sex, men and fashion. Well this show has SOOO much more substance to it than
that. Practically anything that HBO creates is a masterpiece. Some shows take
off and some don't but all of them have something unique and they're well
written. I did watch the last few episodes of Sex so I had an idea of what was
going on in the show.
The instant this movie was over I wanted to watch the entire series. It was
just wonderful. It's kind of funny, the sermon we heard last night at church
actually reminded both of us of the movie! There was talk about forgiveness,
trust, leaving the past behind you and the importance of sex for men as well as
couples. It was crazy. Who would've thought the Sex and the City movie would
be similar to a sermon?
My favorite part of the movie (and the show I guess) is that each character has
their own personality but they all mix together so well. I love how Charlotte
is innocent and very content with her "perfect" life. What great lessons
there. I feel the same way as her sometimes. How can my life be going so
well? Something bad is bound to happen. Well, although that may be true, I
shouldn't dwell on it and live as if it will happen. They all have different
attributes of their personality that you can learn from. I disagree with
Scott in feeling that it was slow in the beginning. Maybe it's because I wasn't
as familiar with the characters as those who have watched the show before.
I would recommend this movie to ANYONE!
Jennifer's Rating: A+ :
Let me start off with how much I LOVED this movie!! It was by
far the best money spent on a movie in a long time. It will keep you laughing
(maybe a few tears) till the end. It really made me remember how much I missed
the episodes every Sunday. The entire cast did a great Job at bring Sex and the
City back to life!!This is a movie I will definately buy and watch over and
over. I don't want to give away anything, but I highly recommend seeing it!! So
get all your girlfriends, or guys together and go see it!!
Lori's
Rating: A : I liked the movie, Of course I was a Sex and the city TV watcher
too. It felt like catching up with old friends. The fashion, love of
girlfriends and forgiveness and love it takes to make those friendships work was
fun to see. Did I mention the fashion??
Alex's Rating: A : This is the
first 15 rated film i have ever seen in a cinema, and what a treat it was!
Unlike most comedy films ( or most films in general these days ), this is
astounding.
Sharp wit, elegance, jazzy music, fashion, and super strong plotlines. There are
four female lead characters, so there are four deep, meaningful, satisfying
plotlines. People who think this is too long can think again. They were not
paying attention. Try squeezing four plotlines, including almost every single
advantage and disadvantage of a romantic relationship into 90 minutes. Not
possible.
This film runs for a gorgeous, satisfying duration of 145 minutes.
Also, a message to men out there. I AM A MAN! I went to see this film with my
dad in the cinema and loved every second of it.
There is nothing for me to be ashamed of here. It just means that i like a film
that most guys avoid... simply because they're guys. Not me. I'm a male SATC fan
and proud of it! WHOOO!
