Synopsis:
In the mountains of Eastern
Europe you never know what you'll get.
Just take a look at Hostel to be terrified
enough never to set it as your destination.
Somehow that travel memo never made it to the
desks of executives at Palisade Defence (yes,
that is spelled correctly). The brass at
PD decides the mountains are an excellent place
to have team building exercises. Throw in
some oddball characters and a killer, add a
pinch of satire and you have Severance.
The
Freak's Rating: D : First of all, I apologize to those of my
loyal friends and family that check my
blog more often than once per week. It
seems I'm tending to only post that
often. I'll try to do better in the
future. The first film I'll review today
is Severance. Severance polarized
critics with some saying it was a
typical slasher film and some suggesting
it was a wonderful parody on slasher
films. I would tend to agree with the
former.
The movie attempts to be an ironic
take-off on horror films, but it
really never does. The horror genre is
one that can be satired. However, you
either go full-steam and make a comedy
or not at all. Comedy bits thrown into
a plot that is scary hasn't been done
successfully since Scream and even
that franchise lost steam after one
film. Severance is cheaply made, poorly
written and cheaply casted. They hired
one girl you'll recognize from The
Faculty (Laura Harris) and the rest of
the cast is throwaway.
