Synopsis:
A 2008 American documentary film directed by
Larry Charles and starring political comedian
Bill Maher. According to Maher, the title of the
film is a portmanteau derived from the words
"religion" and "ridiculous," implying the
satirical nature of the documentary that is
meant to mock the concept of religion and the
problems it brings about.
Matt's Rating:
B- : I have never been a fan of Bill Maher
and this movie didn't change my opinion on him
at all. When people say the liberal elite, he is
someone I think of right away. He has excessive
hubris and really isn't that funny.
The movie is a documentary about Bill going all
over the world talking to people of different
religions and trying to figure out why they
believe what they believe and at the same time
give his views on why people shouldn't believe
those things. As someone who has similar views
to Maher I enjoyed the content of the film. Most
people without these views probably won't like
the film at all since Bill never gives reasons
as to why religion is a good thing. Bill's final
message is that many people believe that
Armageddon will happen in their lifetimes (I've
read somewhere that 60% of Americans believe
this) and Bill worries that this will be true,
not because God will come down and cause
Armageddon but that human beings will, with
nuclear weapons or war. The film ended with
quotes from scripture proclaiming the end of
days. It finally ended with Osama Bin Laden
stating that nuclear weapons are necessary for
Muslims so they can cleanse the earth of
infidels. This view on religion as a terror is
something that is very real in today's world,
even if it is extreme minorities. Bill makes
the plea for the world to become rational (and
not religious) and not kill in the name of
God/Allah and that nonbelievers come out and
show how there are more of them out there then
people think.
If you are a nonbeliever it might be worth it to
see in theaters. If you are a believer, watch at
your own discretion, you'll probably get pretty
upset with Maher.
