Brian's Rating: B+ :
It has been quite some time since I have watched
this movie. I was surprised to find that it was
not as good as I remember. The movie that
started the Indy mystique is still entertaining
and full of good stunts, however some of the
sets and special effects from '81 are
distracting to the viewing experience. In the
80's, watching the faces melt off the Nazi's was
the coolest thing ever. Now it just seemed
cheesy. Like Highlander, I was also distracted
by the terrible background for a storm done on a
sound stage.
The stunt work is still amazing, and the story
line is as entertaining as I remember. However,
after watching this withing the same 2 months as
Last Crusade, I cannot support saying that it is
better. I just flat out enjoyed Last Crusade
more than this one.
After the criticism, it still is the movie that
started it all. It carries the Indy feel to the
core, and is full of imaginative traps, trap
avoidance, fisticuffs, and general on-the-edge
adventuring. I was paying attention to the
stunts and comparing them with Crystal Skull.
The situations are not nearly as outlandish, and
although Indy never really went for realism, it
was at least closer to it than the latest film
in the franchise. This aids in the suspense
since you don't have to completely check your
reason at the door.
