Synopsis:
Seeking revenge for the death of his love,
secret agent James Bond sets out to stop an
environmentalist from taking over a country's
land. Accompanying Bond is Camille, a girl
who has a mission of her own.
The Freak's Rating: B- : James Bond films
are one of the biggest mysteries for me as a
critic. Fro over twenty years I have
watched every James Bond film released.
All of them have exactly the same story.
James Bond is always played by a good looking
guy. Bond has gadgets and a cool car.
Bond gets all the girls, hotter than the last in
each film. The bad guy has multiple
chances to kill Bond but never can. Bond
gets the bad guy and the hot girl in the end.
Spoiling a Bond film is impossible, as the
audience already knows how it will end. So
why do we line up to see it again and again?
I can't explain it, so I embrace it instead.
Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond since Sean
Connery. Having had to endure the Timothy
Dalton and Roger Moore era, Pierce Brosnan
seemed a nice fit until his ego caught up with
him demanding more money for the franchise role.
Craig is a wonderful replacement, believably
tough and handsome enough to garner the women he
does in the films. Judi Dench reprises her
role as M nicely as well. The villain of
the film, Dominic Greene, is played by Mathieu
Amalric. Having an interesting way to
spell Mathew doesn't make you a good actor my
friend. Amalric is forgettable as the
villain of the film. That brings me to the
eye candy of the film, Olga Kurylenko.
Kurylenko is beautiful, no doubt. She is
surprisingly decent as Camille as well.
Maxim magazine recently named her the hottest
Bond girl of all time. I don't feel she
has earned that spot, but her looks and accent
do keep male eyes glued to the screen.
Direction of the film is par for the course,
with some action shots cropped a little too
tightly. This style, brought to life in
Saving Private Ryan can leave some a little
dizzy. Pacing is adequate, keeping you
excited from explosion to explosion. There
are a few lulls that should have been edited
out, but not too bad.
Quantum Of Solace has some holes, specifically
those in pacing and writing. The evil just
isn't evil enough in this one to merit a higher
grade. Fans of the franchise will adore
this, though perhaps be able to admit Casino
Royale was the stronger Craig-helmed machine.
I can't believe it, but I am looking forward to
the next one!
Sebastian's
Rating: B : It was not as good as the series
re boot casino royale.. but it did provide alot
of action and some entertainment.
It had alot of plot holes but despite it's flaws
it's an average movie... Just wait for it to
come out on DVD
Brian's Rating:
C: As Bond films go, this is not one of the
better ones. I agree with what Scott said, but
will expound on a few of the points. First of
all, the criminal in the story is lackluster at
best. The bad guy plot was hardly dastardly,
overly complicated, or insanely evil as you
would expect in a Bond film. In fact, it can
best be described as unethical business
practice, which is hardly exciting since it is
probably not actually far off from how our real
world corporations would operate their
business. The entire bad guy plan is eerily
similar to the real world debacle of the Enron
corporation. The bad guy compound itself wasn't
even that cool other than it employed hydrogen
fuel cells with apparently not a single
safeguard in place to keep them from blowing
up. Other than that, it looked like a deserted
whorehouse that they converted into a set.
You expect implausible plots, and implausible
action sequences in a Bond film, but you don't
expect utterly ridiculous idiotic things like
sending a desk clerk to bring in a supposedly
rogue agent. Of course, once you tip the scale
on this to stop forgiving all the plot holes in
a Bond film, one could write a paper on it.
Another thing about the lackluster writing
effort in this one is that it is too hard to
figure out what the heck is actually happening.
Its even hard to identify the actual main bad
guy and what he is trying to do. I am
accustomed to a Bond film removing any element
of thinking for me and presenting me with plain,
straight forward action sequences and a bad guy
who delivers his plan in a monologue to his
associate.
I realize the opening 15 minutes of this film
purposely employed the directing style that was
popularized in "Saving Private Ryan". I simply
don't like it. It was hard to figure out what
the heck was happening, and unlike the opening
of a war movie where all you really need to know
is that its chaotic, it doesn't fit well here at
all.
There are some good things here that Scott
already hit on. I completely agree that the new
Bond actor is awesome. They are purposely
making him more raw, more rugged, and more of a
loose cannon on the outside, yet completely in
control. He has a bit of the "Wolverine" in him
where he is a lone wolf and willing to go
against orders if he believe it is right. He
also reminds me somewhat of the Jack Bauer
character in the hit television drama, "24".
Throw into the mix a bit of Jason Bourne
influence and you have yourself the new Bond. I
love everything they are doing about the new
character and hope to see that aspect continue.
Missing are Q and his gadgets. I did kind of
miss those ridiculous things, but on the other
hand it is consistent with the style of the new
Bond, so on the whole I think it was an OK move.
I cannot say I would recommend the film since it
is an average action flick at best, however it
doesn't really matter what I write for any Bond
enthusiasts out there since they are going to
see it anyway, and like Scott said, they know
what they are getting.
