The Freak's Rating: C+ : Much buzz going around about this film centered on the performance from Mo'Nique. That buzz was very necessary and validated 100% in the final 10 minutes of the film, but searching for any other reason to watch Precious will be difficult.

Gabourey Sidibe does a fine job of performing as Precious, but Mo'Nique steals scenes so violently (both literally and figuratively) from her that she pales in comparison and her lack of talent shines through, perhaps hurting her chances of garnering much acclaim for her role. Though she was given an Academy Award nomination, I'm thinking the sympathy vote might be why. She was decent, but really nothing more. Supporting roles by Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton are strong, but Mariah Carey's turn as Mrs. Weiss (the social worker) is forgettable at best.

There are depressing films and then there is Precious. Now I'm not a fan of building up a typical Hollywood ending where everyone lives out a fairytale life and all evil in the world is crushed, but a single ray of hope here would have been nice. Precious, instead, ends where it begins, having little character arc that goes anywhere but downward. A positive message, it is not. I'm wanting to actually go back and watch those Oprah episodes where she promoted the film. I can't even begin to think of the words to encourage someone to see this.

The writing and directing here are nothing special. Though the film is strong in certain areas, it is far too depressing to garner a second viewing. For reference only, the final ten minutes of the film showcase amazing acting from Mo'Nique. That said, I'm not a believer any other quality merits a see.

Brian's Rating: C : Why is it that so many of the Oscar nominated movies are just not very entertaining. This movie had a sad story, but it was just too boring for my tastes.

Great acting by the supporting actress -- yeah, probably, but it doesn't make the film a recommendation.
