Michael Cera definitely has a love him or hate him style to acting. He rarely reaches beyond the same character/performance in every role. There are many websites that trace precisely how every film he stars in will go, and they aren't far off. In Paper Heart, Cera breaks away from his normal character and plays...himself? Turns out Cera's "character" requires little to no extension of acting ability as it is nearly identical to his actual persona.
The film starts in a documentary style, but quickly becomes staged at nearly every turn. Charlyne Yi is cute as the film goes on, but overall this is a film that can't decide what it wants to be and therefore ultimately fails on all accounts. There are some incredibly tender and endearing moments for each of the stars, but this is a hard one to recommend.
