The Freak's
Rating: D :
Ali Larter, after her roles in the Final
Destination franchise hit a slump, but has had
her career regenerated since Heroes hit NBC.
Playing one of the more interesting characters
in the series, her beauty and strength (both
physically and mentally) made her a hot
commodity once more. Her agent, no doubt
wanting to capitalize, quickly signed her up for
Obsessed...and perhaps should have read the
script first.
It is
amazing how such a good idea for a film can go
so horribly wrong. Fatal Attraction and a
few others have brought the stalker-style
thriller to the silver screen with gusto.
Obsessed brings it with zero punch and falls
flat with nearly every line of dialogue.
The lines are written to be so cliche that Ali
Larter, instead of soaring as her publicist and
agent wanted with this role, drops further into
the B list pool with every word she utters.
Beyonce has but one asset on film and sorry
girl, but your looks are fading, especially when
draped in typical housewife garb as you are
here.
Dialogue hits a new low when some lines are
inserted that are based on clear racial
stereotypes, no doubt meant to inspire black
audiences to cheer who give this a spin.
These are obvious and annoyingly offensive each
time they are tossed into the mix.
The
final five minutes of the film are ridiculous in
every way imaginable. The inevitable cat
fight ensues, with both women able to whoop ass
as if they are marines. Producers of the
film could have had a hope for a decent final
act had they showcased Larter as the tough chick
she is. Larter is ripped, as all the
viewers of Heroes see, and is even seen in this
film wearing outfits that prominantly display
her arm muscles. Sadly however, we are led
to believe that Beyonce, whose character is a
self-admitted dormant housewife, can turn the
rage of defending her marriage into muscle mass.
It turns ridiculous quickly and turns what could
have been a sexy, intense scene into mush.
Obsessed has but one shining moment within it,
the showcase of Idris Elba, one of the most
underrated actors going today. Having a
successful career with a primarily TV-based
resume, Elba clearly shows he is capable of
playing with the big boys in every scene he is
in. If only his agent would push him in
the right direction, he clearly has what it
takes to be a leading man.
