Stephen King is widely acclaimed as a great
horror author. He has a knack for twisting
reality just enough to put a reader in touch
with this idea of true evil in some form. Most
all of his books pass the freak-out test, and he
must have over 20 of them adapted to film in
some way.
Most of these adaptations are poor flimsy ghosts
of the real story. Often they story itself is
presented correctly, but there is just something
missing that inspires that true fear that is so
prevalent with his books. Some of the writing
style just never seems to make it completely to
the silver screen (with the notable exception of
"The Shining").
This movie follow the same pattern. It was
interesting. I never read the book form of
this, but I can imagine how the uncertainty of
what was going on, as well as the slow reveal,
would have been done much better.
Throwing the concept of evil into a plot is not
new, and is still interesting. However, it
falls short from being freaky, and there is not
enough in the way of good acting or directing to
make up for this.
