The Freak's
Rating: A :
This is one of the greatest films ever made. That said, it is also one of the most misinterpretted films of all time. Many watch it and are terribly offended by the ruthlessness of the characters. Some don't even make it through the film entirely, turning it off before the true message is digested. Many directors produce films simply to create a story on film. Some, like Oliver Stone, become filmmakers to convey vision and opinion via a medium that the public can appreciate.
Stone has never been a director to shy away from his thoughts and when Quentin Tarantino's script for Natural Born Killers made its way across his desk, he lept at the chance to twist it into a take on the media and how they distort the truth, making the lemmings follow whatever opinion of the day sounds best for ratings. Natural Born Killers is a phenomenal commentary on the glorification of violence our society exhibits. For the record, Tarantino has blasted Stone for his distortion of the original script for NBK (which is worthy of seeking out and reading). Both are strong takes on the subject matter, but I do side more with Tarantino than Stone (thus, not an A+ here as the potential was there).
Taking NBK too seriously will immediately result in being offended and taken aback by its intensity. The film instead should be embraced for its unparalleled style and storytelling. The scenes zip by, the dialogue is sharp and Stone masterfully puts the pieces together into a wildly entertaining story. NBK is essential viewing for fans of Stone who may have missed it as well as any QT fans who appreciate his storylines.
