 Synopsis
:
Brian
Herzlinger has always been a dreamer. At
age 6 he saw E.T. and immediately became
infatuated with Drew Barrymore. Joining
her fan club, he followed her career with
borderline stalker infatuation. At age 27,
Brian was on a pilot for the game show Taboo.
On the show he won $1100 and the windfall gave
him an idea. Enlisting the help of his two
friends Jon Gunn and Brett Winn, Brian set off
to get a date with Drew. The concept was
simple, 30 days and $1100 to try to get the
date. Exploiting the Circuit City
electronics return policy, Brian purchased a
video camera and off they went, documenting the
entire journey.
My Date With Drew follows Brian and his
friends every step of the way. From
publicists to stylists to first cousins of Drew
who don't even know her, there are many steps to
finally get chances to realize his dream.
Now granted, he isn't exactly the normal guy.
He's the normal guy who already has connections
to producers and writers in Hollywood.
The Freak's
Rating: B+ : Every
one of us at some point in our lives has looked
at a movie star and thought, "I could get
her/him". This strange logic comes from
our notion that if we could only meet them then
they would see how wonderful we are.
Seeing celebrities in a light that makes them
personable (which most PR people make sure
happens) allows us to believe we truly know
these people. This logic creates the
twisted feeling that makes me somehow feel upset
that Jessica Alba is pregnant, the same feeling
that makes Jen a little sad that Keith Urban is
now married. We never had a shot anyway,
but somehow our minds won't let the possibility
completely disappear. For most people this
is simply a feeling they ignore and somehow
rationalize as something they'll never get to
do. For some...it turns into something a
little different.Everyone has felt this way
about some celebrity and seeing someone actually
work to achieve this goal is surprisingly
inspiring. The guy might have actually had
a chance if he was somewhat responsible with his
life. He can't keep a job, is relying on
his parents mailing him money to eat and
essentially leeching off of everyone he can to
survive. Even though I wanted to strangle
him for some of his shortcomings, I couldn't
help but root for him throughout the entire
film. It is extremely entertaining.
