Synopsis:
This is the story of Molly, played by the always-adorable Natalie Portman. Molly is the manager of the Wonder Emporium, a small but magical toy store nestled in New York City. Mr. Magorium, played by Dustin Hoffman, is the owner of the Emporium. Magorium, who has been alive for 243 years now forsees his death and wants to appoint Molly the new caretaker of the store. However, the store dislikes the idea of Magorium leaving and Molly has internal debating on what to do. Will she follow her dreams of being a classical pianist or take over the store? I haven't cared less what a character would do since I pondered whether Ron Burgundy and Napoleon Dynamite would win the gold in Blades of Glory.

The Freak's Rating: D- : The holiday season and a Jamaica trip have left my blog feeling neglected for many days now. As I have done before, I will now promise to do a better job of updating it. On to the next in the latest film review...Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Does the title sound cute? It isn't.
This movie tries DESPERATELY to have the magic of movies past. The problem is that the best "magical" movies never tried that hard. The Neverending Story, Willy Wonka...these just handed you the story and let you make it feel magical in your head.

This film force feeds you whimsical things and is ridiculously overdone. Dustin Hoffman is over the top as Magorium and isn't loveable in the least bit. I was actually enthusiastic when he left. Natalie Portman plays her most annoying character to date, needlessly pretending to play the piano with her hands and making quirky comments on how much she loves Magorium. The only bright moment in the film is Jason Bateman, who does a good job as the store's accountant. Bateman is an incredibly underrated actor and shines as usual. He has a couple nice moments with Eric, the 9 year old boy who works in the store.

The ending of this film is horrendous, taking every family-film cliche and regurgitating it violently in an attempt to gain love from the audience and push them into magical admiration. Halfway through the film I wanted something to fall on Molly's hands to crush her pianist dreams for good.

Jen Elder - D - If this movie had good writing and good directing it would've been decent because I like the concept of the movie. What did I say to you Scott? It seemed like Natalie Portman had a free weekend and decided to make a movie. She can do so much better. Good thing the popcorn was good!
