Synopsis:
Mr. Brooks is the story of Earle Brooks
(played by Kevin Costner). Earle is the
Portland man of the year, has a beautiful
wife and family, is rich, runs his own
business and most interestingly has a
secret side that loves to kill people. Now
everyone at one point or another has heard
a bad voice in their head. When you are in
the 10 items or less line and someone
jumps in front of you with 20, this voice
tells you to smack them in the face with
your bag of cat litter. Most ignore this
voice and listen to their conscience.
Earle has a voice as well, one that is so
powerful it appears to him in physical
form. Rather than ignoring the voice in
his head, Earle actually converses with it
(noone else can hear or see of course).
The voice even has a name (Marshall) and
wins arguements much of the time.
The
Freak's Rating: A- : My selection of which films to review is
based on four factors: general critic
consensus (obtained from Rotten Tomatoes),
gathering of trusted critic opinions (Roger
Ebert & Richard Roeper), personal desire to
see the film and finally on family and
friend recommendations. I also weigh in
negative family/friend opinions, but they
NEVER pull me away if one of the other three
qualifications led me to see the film. Every
now and then I am intrigued enough to see a
movie simply because of a bad review from a
family member or friend. Roeper just barely
recommended Mr. Brooks, but my cousin Angie
HATED it...so of course I saw it :).
Dane Cook (Mr. Smith) does surprisingly
well as a witness to one of Mr. Brooks'
murders. Mr. Smith decides to blackmail
Mr. Brooks into taking him with him on one
of his murders. Demi Moore plays Tracy
Atwood, a cop after the thumbprint killer
(Brooks).
My cousin used the word "hate"; I would
nearly say "love"! Yes, there are holes in
the plot, but it is incredibly
entertaining. I will pause for Angie (who
will no doubt read this) to mutter
something under her breath and formulate
some points with which to call me and yell
at me promptly :).
Mr. Brooks is a well-formulated thriller.
Editing is done well and the movie never
lags. The movie has a couple twists you
don't see coming. Though the ending is
rather formulaic, the movie succeeds in
keeping audiences entertained...which was
its goal. For that reason, it receives a A
rating. On a side A/V note, the sound is
phenomenal in the movie (gunshots in a
hallway scene are some of the best I've
ever heard on Blu Ray).
Lori's Rating: B - This was not
a typical Kevin Costner movie. I was suprised and horrified at the
reality of his issues.
Angie's Rating: F - Kevin
Costner is a good actor, and I can understand why he is a great
choice for this film. He is best known for the respectable,
likeable, romatic, and kind characters he has played. I just can't
give this movie a good rating. It is the only movie I have walked
out of feeling completely disturbed by. There were no good guys in
the movie... I couldn't bring myself to sympathize with anyone in
the movie. There was nothing to connect to with the characters. I
felt like I was watching a crime that I couldn't stop and there
would never be any justice. At least in other serial killer movies
the cops are something that we can relate to, someone who we can
like... a little bit. Everyone in the film was bent... like looking
through a broken mirror... I guess I don't like to think of all
people as untrustworthy, evil, and cruel. The storyline, well....
it does catch you off guard. I can't condemn any certain thing
about the movie, it's an overall feeling with this one. I just
can't get past my own feelings on this one.
Brian's Rating: B : I found
this movie to be entertaining. I did not know that Kevin Costner
remembered how to make a good film. There was Bull Durham, Field of
Dreams, and then, well.... nothing. You can make an argument for
Dances with Wolves, but it is only an argument that is lost in my
opinion. However, this movie was entertaining. For some
reason, you find yourself rooting for the serial killer to not get
caught. Perhaps it is due to the warped human psychology that
causes us to be convinced that if we really wanted to be a criminal,
we could do so with such perfection that we would never get caught.
Mr. Brooks is that guy. Angie states that this movie was
disturbing. To some degree, it is. Mr. Brooks is "likeable" and
our most basic instinct tells us that this just is not right.
Good movie, but in accordance with the MMF rating scale I would not
necessarily need to watch it again, nor would I purchase it. I
would, however, recommend it.
Sebastian's Rating: B :
yeah i like this movie, i thought it wouldn't be that good to tell
you the truth, but i quite liked it
