Much was made of this movie. It has been praised for being well ahead of its budget, and an inspirational thought provoking piece that all indy film makers can pattern after.
Perhaps it was built up too much for me, but I would not praise it nearly as much as I have heard. Sure, its done well enough, and the story plot is interesting, however the primary plot device is not as inventive as some would make it out to be. Any Sci-Fi fan has encountered a similar plot to this in a book or a movie at some point in their life.
I don't want to spoil anything, but it does do a decent job of humanizing the characters. For a sci-fi genre, that is often lacking. Kevin Spacey does the voice of the central computer, and that was kind of fun. It hearkens back to 2001 and HAL.
I am one who likes to see indy movies--I am sad to see Mirimax go. 2009 was an excellent year for this. Moon is good, but not as good as Brothers Bloom, or 500 days of Summer. Still its a refreshing changes from all the huge money blockbusters that are so prevalent. If you are a fellow lover of indy films, then you should check this out.
Sebastian's Rating: A : I saw close to 20 movies in the past 2-3 months in the cinema, ranging from avatar to where the wild things are. Out of all the movies I have seen recently, and probably out of all the movies of 2009, I think moon tops the list.
Sam rockwell is an amazing actor. He first caught my eye in the green mile, playing his role wonderfully. He has been in many great movies, ranging from confesions of a dangerous mind all the way to the assasination of jesse jackson. However, none of these movies even compare to his new movie, moon. Also, kevin spacey does the finest job possible with his voice of Gerty, easily the best Artificial intellegence of all time.
Direction is fantastic here. Filmed with a budget of onl $5 million, it puts everything else to shame. It has a very -2001 space oddessy- feel to it, and theres a bit of a hybrid tint on all the vehicals. Inside the base, it never feels claustraphobic and throughout the movie there is an eerie feel to it. It feels empty, but puts you in the mood.
The timing of the film, is confusing at first, but well placed. By the end of the film, you get a magical sensation. You feel depressed but at the same time you are happy. Moon (yet again) blows you away in every way imaginable. As stated before, Moon was made with a very low budget, but puts all blockbusters to shame, such as 2012 and Transformers 2. Do everything you can to get your hands on moon, I guarentee you will not be dissapointed.
