Synopsis:
Kidman plays the title character of
the film and we see Margot as she visits her estranged sister (Jennifer Jason
Leigh) along with her fiance (Jack Black). The family is, of course,
disfunctional on the highest levels. Margot coming back to her hometown
stirs up feelings and soon the girls are acting as if they are young sisters
again (see picture above).
The Freak's
Rating: D+ : Being
smart and original is something audiences label films as, not producers and
writers. Ask Diablo Cody, the Academy Award winning writer of
Juno, if she thought she had a winner from the start and
she'll tell you the same thing she told the director of the film, "this script
is funny". She didn't know she had such quality work until after audience
response was seen. Until that point it was just an idea.
Margot At The Wedding attempts to
force audiences to see it as original and succeeds on a few levels, but not
enough to recommend. I've always been a fan of Nicole Kidman. My
wife might tell you it is simply cosmetic, but I do think the girl has acting
chops.
The movie's biggest surprise is Jack
Black's portrayal of the unemployed Malcolm. Malcom's character is very
interesting and Black pulls of a dramatic role I wasn't sure he could.
Humor is interjected in the film in
such a way that you can tell you are supposed to be laughing, but it wasn't
enough to even pull a chuckle out of me. The creative team behind this
film is that brought audiences the independent weirdo-flick The Squid & The
Whale. Jen & I are still scratching our heads about that one. I am
all for character development in film. I bash films that don't include it
and this time I'm bashing one that overdoes it. This is a depressing film
that contributes next to nothing besides good performances by all cast members.
