 Synopsis:
Life Of Brian is the
story of Brian, a man living at the same time as
Jesus Christ. Brian was born in Bethlehem
the same day as Christ, just inches from him
actually. As an adult, Brian joins the
Peoples' Front of Judea, one of many rebellious
groups of Jews fighting for independence from
Rome who accomplish nothing.
Unwillingly promoted to leadership in the group,
Brian becomes the "messiah".
The Freak's
Rating: B- : Arguing
over which Monty Python film is the best
includes the mentioning of The Holy Grail, Life
of Brian and The Meaning Of Life. In my
case, I prefer the latter. Geeks and
British-comedy fans will meaninglessly debate
which is the better of the three films, but The
Meaning of Life, to me, cannot be beaten.
Pulling in as a strong second place for me is
Life Of Brian.
In searching for a
more thorough synopsis of the film, I find that
it is in fact just as simple as the short
paragraph I just wrote. The side gags are
what makes the movie as entertaining as it is,
not an incredibly complex storyline. Essentially the film follows those who weren't
hearing the message of Christ and had other
things to do.
All
the typical Python style is here, with each
member of the comedy team playing multiple
characters, even women. Life Of Brian has
some amazingly quotable lines and you can't help
but chuckle at the light that the Roman Empire
is held in during those times. One does
have to wonder how crucifixions were handled.
Was it dramatic and drawn out, or did management
simply say "crucifixion? Grab your cross
and join the line to the left". Life Of Brian has moments of comical
genius, but I still feel it is a tad less than The
Meaning Of Life. That said, Life Of Brian
is still vastly entertaining and worth a see to
any Python fan who may have missed it.
Sebastian's Rating: B : not as entertaining as
the holy grail... or even live at the holiwood ball, but it was still a good
laugh :)
