Synopsis:
Good Night, and Good Luck director George Clooney pulls double duty once
again in this sports-oriented romantic comedy set against the formation of
professional football in the 1920s. Dodge Connelly (Clooney) is a brash
and handsome gridiron giant who is equally comfortable leading his team in a
barroom brawl or charging for a touchdown in a packed stadium. But when
Connelly's team loses their sponsor and the entire league appears set to
collapse, the quick-thinking jock attempts a creative late-game comeback. If
Connelly can convince former college football star and decorated war hero Carter
Rutherford (John Krasinski) to join the team, there may be hope for the
ill-fated team after all. To cub reporter Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger),
Rutherford seems simply too good to be true. As Littleton digs deep into
Rutherford's past, the two teammates enter into a fierce competition for her
affections.
Angie's Rating: B :
I thought this movie was a strong "B". I didn't leave the theater
thrilled or anything, but I thought it was well put together, and I did enjoy
it. Thanks be to the heavens their wasn't much correlation that can be made
from the "romantic comedies" I've seen lately. The movie has more of the feel
of a play, in the way the scenes are edited and flow. It sticks to it's 20's
era with the music and hats... and is quick witted and for lack of a better
term, "cute." (I don't mean cute in a bad way) I think this movie is a good
time, and does a good job keeping with it's theme. Oh yeah, and their was a
collective cheer in the audience when Lexi (Renee Zellweger) announced "I'm from
Champaign, Illinois"

Brian's
Rating: C- : Is it a comedy? A romantic-comedy? A sports achievement
movie? Its a bit of all 3, and does all 3 poorly.
If it wasn't for this being a football movie, it wouldn't crack the 'C' range.
My biggest criticism is that the story is just very blah. It had the strong
feel of a movie made for the Lifetime channel with some named actors thrown in.
The thing is, the were not even cast well and didn't really fit the part.
I did not get attached to any part of this movie at all, or to any character in
the movie. I wasn't yawning throughout, but was not very entertained.
The
Freak's Rating: C- : I agree with Brian on his points. There is
very much blah here and little substance to hold onto. I am especially
insulted that the history of professional football is so horribly rewritten.
As a fan of one of the original teams that helped to start the NFL, I'm insulted
that we're to believe a Duluth team had anything to do with the origination of
one of the greatest sports creations in history. My beloved Chicago Bears
(at that time the Decatur Staleys) are at least mentioned at one point in the
film. Plus, I give props to the writers for allowing Zelwegger (who has
officially hit the sex appeal wall by the way) to say that she is from
"Champaign, Illinois" (home to my other favorite team (University of Illinois
Fighting Illini). However, even the mentions of my two favorite franchises
can't save this one and shoot it to a recommendation.
