I recently read an article about how much money certain actors "owe" Hollywood. Since Ray won him the Academy Award, Jamie Foxx is the highest on the list. He has turned out one mediocre flick after another. Though Law Abiding Citizen teamed him with Gerard Butler (another one on the list by the way), it still doesn't have enough steam to carry Foxx back into the black for the studios.
Foxx and Butler are adequate at their roles, providing enough "root for the bad guy" and "sympathy for the good guy" moments. The script is fairly well written, with major suspense that keeps you interested throughout...at least to a point. There is a notable plot twist where the audience is jerked in quite the opposite way they are feeling. It isn't done well. In fact, it makes you question the design of the plot up to that point. It just doesn't fit, and therfore the movie begins to slide immediately after.
The sad part here is that the talent was there, the script was there to be had, it just fell short. Any parent or spouse out there can easily relate to the potential loss of a loved one and how infuriated you would be if they were set free from punishment. Vengeance is easy to communicate, but somehow the writers fell short here. For those who only want action and to see these stars on screen, they will be happy enough. For those who want a story with some form of structure, look elsewhere.
