Synopsis:

L.A. Confidential is a murder mystery set in 1950s L.A., when Hollywood was doing its best to lure the population to relocate to the west coast. Imagine a time when no one wanted 72 degree weather year round! The birth of paparazzi is on display as well. Sets are wonderfully put together and the realism of Hollywood of old embraces the audience of the film thanks to fantastic cinematography.

Kevin Spacey, Russell Crow, Guy Pierce, Kim Basinger and Danny Devito highlight a cast of who’s who in Hollywood in one of the best movies of the 90s. It is hard to believe that at the time this film was out most of the stars, with the exception of Devito & Basinger were signed for their parts for little cash. Russell Crowe was a newcomer and no one knew who Guy Pierce was.

The Freak's Rating: A : Central characters are a young cop trying to make a name for himself (Eddie - Pierce), a tough guy cop who has a thing for defending ladies (Bud - Crowe) and a press-loving cop who wants to be an actor (Jack - Spacey).

The story heats up when an unsolved gangland style murder occurs and Eddie just happens to land it as his first case. Three suspects are rounded up, but whether or not they are the real criminals leads Eddie on a quest for the truth.

Corruption, mystery and a third act worthy of a second showing that solidifies all the leads as icons in the field make L.A. Confidential worth watching. It is a good film, but stays just a hair away from the big leagues. Kim Basinger received an Oscar for her overrated 10 minutes of screen time, but is still decent in the role. The always underappreciated Oliver Cromwell does an amazing job with his turn as the captain and Guy Pierce shows pre-Memento moments of brilliance as well. This film turned into a vehicle for Russell Crowe to become the mega-star he is today and his performance doesn’t disappoint.

Watch for the best interrogation scene I’ve ever seen as well as a Departed-style twist that you won’t see coming until it hits you like a punch in the chest.
