Synopsis:
In The Shadow Of The Moon is
a documentary on the men who walked on the moon,
their missions and the effect doing so had on
their lives. Ron Howard presents this film
and had a hand in everything from retrieving
footage to editing. Reliving the struggles
the space program endured throughout all of the
Apollo missions, including the tragedy of Apollo
1, the insanity of Apollo 13 and the initial
steps on the moon is fascinating from a
historical standpoint.
The Freak's
Rating: B- : Every now and then I endure a
tirade from some of my Republican friends
criticizing John F Kennedy. Why is this
man looked at as a hero? What did he
really do except be assassinated? I've
even heard that line. Something that
Kennedy did, something that is really lacking
nowadays in politics, is inspire the American
people. Kennedy took a bold step in
proclaiming that by 1970 we would walk on the
moon. He made this proclamation during a
time when this country desperately needed
positivity. The Vietnam war was on the
horizon, racism was at a boiling point and
belief in politicians was low. Kennedy
made this statement and our country united
behind it.
NASA licensed out footage
never shown before and it is fantastic.
Everything from lost footage of rovers cruising
the moon's surface to shots of astronauts
shaving is in this film and every second is
precious. The movie is told in a docudrama
style, similar to
Touching The Void. Interviews with the
astronauts who have walked on the moon, their
narration of events and footage are intertwined
to bring a story that's easy to absorb to the
screen.
The
really amazing footage is of how the country
reacts to the space program, with hope and
amazement. Seeing parking lots filled for
miles around the launchpad is fascinating.
I wonder if anything could unite our nation in
such a positive way again.
For
anyone who has a childlike fantasy of being in
space, In The Shadow Of The Moon will be a real
treat. If you have a major interest in the
subject, I would encourage you to seek out the
HBO Miniseries From The Earth To The Moon.
It is a 12 hour long epic on the history of the
space voyages we took in the 1960s. From
The Earth To The Moon is produced by Tom Hanks
and has all the quality you'd expect from an HBO
presentation.
In The Shadow Of The Moon
isn't a must own, but enthusiasts will love it.
