Rating: B+ :
In 1997, I recall seeing In The Company Of Men
for the first time and being blown away.
Nearly 12 years ago it was unheard of to have
such a dark comedy as this one be so blatantly
misogynistic and hilarious at the same time.
Aaron Eckhart was nobody, years from playing
Harvey Dent in
The Dark Knight. There was virtually
not a single known name in the cast.
Writing for this film is stellar, flat out
amazing and hilarious. Eckhart is the true
star of the film and doesn't disappoint in a
single scene he is in. Dialogue is
wonderful, the lines are delivered perfectly by
Eckhart and the pacing lets the movie flow
nicely. The choice to cast Matt Malloy as
Howard is both rewarding and disappointing at
times, the only reason the film isn't an A.
I
can't imagine a guy who has been dumped not
fully enjoying this film, though some women may
be completely insulted. It is a divisive
and conversation inspiring film to say the
least. Though not for everyone, I
challenge anyone who sees it to deny the power
of the final few scenes of the film. They
are phenomenal in every way. The film set
a standard for the way an independent comedy
should perform at Sundance and is definitely
worthy of checking out.
