Synopsis:
A romantic warrior breaks a beautiful
member of a rebel army out of prison to help her rejoin her fellows, but things
are not what they seem.
Brian's Rating:
B : In the same vein as Crouching Tiger, and Hero, this is another mystical
martial arts movie with a love story mixed in. The difference is, this movie
is more of a love story with a little mystical martial arts mixed in. It also
shares an intrigue element with the other 2 films.
I loved some of the shots in this film, like when a throwing knife is shown in
slow motion heading right at the camera. The acting was good, and I liked the
sound track. It just had too many slow parts to be an A. Oh, and it went off
the deep end a bit at the end.
The
Freak's Rating: A- : Rarely does such an equal amount of georgeous
cinematography pair with a decent storyline and House Of Flying Daggers pulls
this pairing off beautifully. Zhang Ziyi is THE Asian fantasy girl,
stealing every scene she is in with her onscreen beauty.
Cinematography in this film is an A+
and possibly the best you'll see this decade. Shots are perfectly framed
and shutter speed is spot on. Costume and set design is at least three
steps ahead of anything Hollywood generates. Acting is the only downside
of the film and is extremely easy to overlook when you gaze in wonder at the
beauty of some of the scenery.
This was one of the first Blu Ray
discs I purchased and is still a reference title for color capability.
Angie's Rating: A : I have owned this movie since it came out on DVD. I
love it for it's beautiful cinematography! The storyline is imaginitive and has
a different twist on the oh so boring typical romance. The acting leaves a
little something to be desired, but I just watch it in the original language
with the subtitles on... it's like a beautiful moving story book. I recommend
getting it in the highest quality that is available for your set up. :) If you
love martial arts and the chinese style film making you'll enjoy this that much
more.
