The Freak's
Rating: B : Friday The 13th, Nightmare On
Elm Street and even Halloween can be scary in
their own way, but none hold a candle to this
film. You never see news stories reporting
about a man who, donning a bloody hockey mask,
terrorized teenagers while they had sex on
camping trips. You do, however, see
stories about absolutely insane individuals
doing unspeakable things to innocent people.
If you ask me, that is what is terrifying.
Rob
Zombie is an amazing horror director. He
does a fantastic job of building tension,
getting spooky performances out of his cast and
quite simply scaring the hell out of the
audience.
House
Of A Thousand Corpses sat on the shelf for
nearly two years, having every studio in town
pass on distribution because of the violence.
Word is that Zombie had full creative control
and wouldn't recut the film to make a studio
head happy. He would rather have it sit,
thinking some day it would see the light of day.
Lions Gate decided to take a risk with it.
Its success and cult following launched Zombie
into a nice career doing horror films.
This
is a truly scary film. It falls flat in a
couple sections to me and overdoes the violence
for effect, which is the flaw that keeps it from
a higher grade. Overall, it is way better
than your typical slasher film and will scare
you for days after seeing it, which in my
opinion is what makes a good horror film.
