Synopsis:
In the days before Christmas near a
little-known border crossing on the Mohawk reservation between New York State
and Quebec. Here, the lure of fast money from smuggling presents a daily
challenge to single moms who would otherwise be earning minimum wage. Two women
- one white, one Mohawk, both single mothers faced with desperate circumstances
- are drawn into the world of border smuggling across the frozen water of the
St. Lawrence River.
Brian's Rating: C :
This move was unspectacular. The underlying
story is of poverty, the desperate situations it
puts people in, and how it impacts their life on
a personal daily basis. As a whole, there was a
good opportunity to present an altruistic state
of society that many of us cannot understand.
I just think the director missed it due to some
poor the casting choices. Aside from the lead
actress who played the mother in the film, I did
not like any of the cast. I was never really
sold on their characters and therefore had
difficulty getting vested in the messaged.
I still give it a C because, although some
effort was involved, it did give me pause to
introspect the situation of poverty on a
family. The movie is mostly sad and depressing
(on purpose) but there were a couple of designed
glimpses of human goodness that really shine
through over the underlying backdrop of pall.
Contrasted like this, one of them in particular
had some emotional power.
