Synopsis:
Frida chronicles the life Frida Kahlo
(Salma Hayek) shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina),
as the young couple took the art world by storm. From her complex and enduring
relationship with her mentor and husband to her illicit and controversial affair
with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative and romantic entanglements with women,
Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and
sexual revolutionary.
Brian's Rating: C- :
I like historical fiction
movies....usually. This one just was not all that good.
The story is about the Mexican painter chick named Frida who was married to
another famous mexican painter dude named Diego. It is a biographical film, and
the movie highlights various moments from her life starting when she was a young
adult, and ending with her death at the age of 47.
I was not pleased with how this film was directed. At times I was downright
confused at some of the scene transitions. One just should not have to work so
hard to understand what is going on when watching a movie. It just seemed like
I was watching a fragmented kaleidescope perspective on her life, and never
really found the groove of the story arc.
I keep it out of the D range because it was acted well. Selma Hayek plays Frida,
and if you can manage to stop being distracted by the uni-brow she wears in the
film, she does a noticeably good job in the role.
