Synopsis:
First Snow is the
story of Jimmy
Starks (Pierce).
Jimmy is a
fast-talking
businessman who runs
into car trouble in
the middle of
nowhere. There
is of course only
one car shop, one
mechanic, one
restaurant, etc...
I always wonder
where these little
middle-of-nowhere
towns are. I
suppose I just need
to get out of the
cluttered part of
the country to truly
wander upon them.
After the mechanic
tells Jimmy he is
looking at a few
hours wait, Jimmy
decides to visit the
local fortune
teller.
The
madness of the story
truly begins at this
point. A
eccentric fortune
teller allows Jimmy
into his van, tells
Jimmy a few
predictions and when
asked about the
future goes into a
fit of psychic rage.
Jimmy writes this
off to be the work
of a nutty fortune
teller, until the
initial predictions
begin to come true.
Finally hunting down
the fortune teller
to retrieve the
information he saw
about his future,
Jimmy is terrified
to hear he will
survive until at
least the first snow
of the year.
The movie follows
Jimmy as he copes
with his loss and
ultimately his
acceptance of his
fate
The Freak's
Rating: C- :
Guy
Pierce has made some
great flicks.
From a good-guy cop
in
L.A. Confidential
to a person with a
memory issue in
Memento, he has
ventured into some
interesting roles.
You can almost sense
from looking at his
resume that he
doesn't want to be
mainstream. It
seems as if he wants
to be the king of
independent,
lesser-known films.
Though he does a
good job with the
roles he has chosen,
I would like to see
him come out into
the light of
mainstream.
Then and perhaps
only then will his
talent be fully
utilized.
The movie hits some
interesting high
notes, but the story
isn't solid enough
for a repeat viewing
for me. Still,
fans of Guy Pierce
and Memento-style
mysteries/thrillers
might enjoy it.
