Synopsis:
A couple undergo a procedure to erase
each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but it is
only through the process of loss that they discover what they had to begin with.
Sebastian's
Rating: A : It's not a very hard descision... this it probably the best
romance story of all time.
After seeing Charlie Kaufman's Being John Malkovich about two weeks ago, It
appeared to me that someone who's written a script so well must have a few more
titles under his name.
As i was walking down the comedy isle, i saw this movie blink at me. Now Jim
carrey is not my favourite film actor, It always seems to have the same stlye.
in Me Myself and Irliene, he was crazy. in The Mask, he was crazy, In this
movie, he was crazy... in a different sort of way.
Whilst i was reading the back label it was clear to me that this was a romance
more than anything else. And when you think of Jim carrey, you can't think of
him in a serious movie. However, it was a cheap tuesday late night and i though
"why not."
The moment i started watching this movie, i was rater confused. After a while i
seemed to know what was going on. Even though this movie was not particularly
"funny" It didn't mean it wasn't exnjoyable. Towards the end you seem to be
thinking to yourself, about life and the way things are.
Towards the end, the message hits you, nobodies perfect. Ive seen this movie
twice and each time I watch it I smile, because this "romantic comedy" puts out
a message that romance movies don't tell you these days... Nobody's Perfect."
"A twisty, trippy, yet moving take on love, Kaufman-style."
The
Freak's Rating: A : I wouldn't call this the best romance of all time
like Sebastian does, but it is certainly a great film. We all have
terribly painful things that have happened to us in our lives. What if we
could simply go in for an operation and forget them? Would it be better
than growing as a human being because of them? A very intriguing storyline
is accented quite beautifully by creative special effects and wonderful acting.
Winslet is perfect as the object of affection and Carrey is fantastic as Joel.
This was one I was pulling for during
Oscar season in 2005. It has enough style to garner acclaim from even the
toughest critics and the masses embraced it as well...those who made the effort
to find it. Eternal Sunshine was one of my earliest forays into calling
local theaters to request films. This one actually worked!
Barring a few odd sequences with Elijah Wood and Kirsten Dunst, this is a near
perfect film worthy of picking up for anyone who may have missed it.
The
Shou's Rating: C- : Sorry guys to drag your rating down but I just
didn't like this film.
I'll just go through the good and bad things about the film:
Good:
The concept or idea of the film was very clever. The idea of being able to
delete a part of your memory that you don't want seems original and smart. If
only there was such a thing (I might use it myself). The casting was quite good
with Jim Carey showing the world that not only is he an funny-guy. The effects
were quite good.
Bad:
This movie could used the concept much better, it could of created a much deeper
and philosophical movie with it. The scening (as I like to call it) was pretty
poor, it was just jumping all over the place, the only way you could tell if it
was very past, past or present was by distinguishing the color of the main
female leads role.
In the end there was something that bugged me about this movie. I simply didn't
like it.
(I watched this film on a laptop on a crowded bus, at times I was kind of
distracted. When I stated that I didn't really like the film, the person who
showed me the film simply stated that I have bad taste. Meh.)
