Jen & I saw this recently at a "Movie On The
Barn" event in Rochester, MN. It is a
gathering the historical society holds where
they project a film onto the side of a barn for
free and sell concessions. With a small
bag of popcorn in my hand I re-watched a film
that truly made me fall in love with movies.
It is also a film that made me fall in love with
Drew Barrymore, still a little cinematic crush
of mine.
There
is good acting all around, with nothing overly
spectacular. Barrymore, of course, is
adorable and Henry Thomas has a decent turn as
Elliot. There are highs and lows with each
performance (Barrymore withstanding) and when
Elliot groans at the end of the film I find it
unbelievable.
Steven Spielberg hit a high (at the time) with
E.T., perfectly blending science fiction with a
family film in what some call "the best family
film ever made". For me it is a great film
without question, but needed a little better
acting to take it over the top.
Sebastian's
Rating: B+ : I haven't seen this movie in
ages, whenever the last time it aired on tv was.
THe special effects at the time probably were
outstanding, these days however it doesn't
appeal to me as anything more than a classic. It
didn't have special effects like star wars, but
the humour and the credability of making an
alien with a personality is well done, giving
this movie a solid B+
