Synopsis:
Filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to
Antarctica to capture its landscape's rarely seen beauty on film.
The Freak's Rating: C- :
Having made 2005's fascinating documentary
Grizzly Man, Werner Herzog was given an easy
greenlight for this documentary project.
American interest in documentaries hit a peak
with March Of The Penguins. Combining both
of the previous statements, it was easy to see
why Encounters At The End Of The World was made.
The
real problem here is that Herzog lacks
determination on his subject matter.
Focusing first on the types of people who would
choose to live their lives in this bitterly cold
area of the planet, then quickly turning to the
creatures and beauty of the under water world
some dive in, the movie seems all over the place
and therefore doesn't fully explain either
element thoroughly.
Being
released on Blu Ray, Encounters At The End Of
The World captured my attention as a simple home
theater excursion, to showcase the bright whites
and deep blues found in such a place.
Sadly, that was the only reason this documentary
doesn't drop below a C-. The
cinematography is nicely done, but as a doc,
this one is fairly worthless.
